Community Chests are fund raising organizations that collect money from local businesses and workers to distribute it to community projects. They were first founded in 1913 and have been working to raise funds to help bring about development in the society. They are the cooperative organization of people and social welfare agencies in a city.

Community Chest funds are also known as United Funds and serve two purposes. They raise funds through an annual campaign for the member agencies and budget the raised funds. The amount is administered by the community chest itself or also as a joint endeavor with a community welfare council. The funds raised are used in projects which will improve the quality of life of residents, groups and communities throughout the country.

Research assistance grants are financial help provided to students working as research assistants on faculty research projects. The projects undertaken by the students have significant educational content and allow them to learn valuable research skills. Students employed through theses grants generally work for 8-10 hours a week for some time of their semester tenure and are not employed in other work-study job.

Since these grants are made to the faculty, to be paid to the students later, the proposals for research assistance grants should be submitted by the faculty members, academic departments or programs themselves.

Grants for research cover funding for scientific research in all areas and involve a screening process through which potential research projects are evaluated and awarded funding on that basis. Research funding generally comes from two major sources, corporations and government. Government grants for research are awarded to support high quality research leading to discovery and advancement.

BOC Foundation for Environment was established in 1990. The UK based foundation was established to fund air and water quality projects and has been involved in many projects thereafter. Some of the ongoing projects include roadside emission testing review, development of clean fuel cell technology, oxidation techniques for combusting pharmaceutical toxic waste, evaluation of photovoltaic for solar power, investigation of ozone depletion and many more.

BOC Foundation has been funding several projects concerned with protection of environment and conservation of natural resources.

Research work results in the development of novel ideas that might prove to be useful for the development of the society in general.Therefore, some of the charities and trusts award grants to students opting for higher studies
